On September 9th, 2013, Sony Interactive Entertainment Japan announced the PlayStation Vita TV, a set-top microconsole based on the Vita. It is capable of interacting with the PlayStation 4 through Remote Play. PlayStation Portable games and PlayStation Network software must be stored in PlayStation Vita memory cards. The PS Vita is backwards compatible with all PlayStation Portable software, but like the PSP Go, it lacks a UMD drive, relying instead on PlayStation Vita cards, a proprietary flash memory card. The PlayStation Vita was a handheld system manufactured by Sony Interactive Entertainment, and the successor to the PlayStation Portable, released in Winter 2012.
